Japanese papers are valued by fine printmakers, but there are so many different types that selecting the right paper can be overwhelming. In this workshop you’ll learn to select Japanese papers with knowledge and to ensure a great edition.

This course is presented in recorded modules which equal a four hour workshop. The fee includes all video modules, which will be available for three months, as well as a materials kit. The materials kit includes Japanese paper and most of the supplies you’ll need for the workshop along with basic items from your own studio.

In this workshop you’ll learn

· what makes Japanese paper different from Western paper

· why the qualities of Japanese paper are so well suited to printmaking

· understanding paper weights

· understanding different fiber types (kozo / gampi / mitsumata)

· knowing where the fiber was grown is important to know

· how the fiber was processed makes a differnce in your paper

· what to look for in a sized paper

· sizing your own paper

· natural vs. white paper

· printing on dyed paper

This workshop will include a module on printmakers who have used Japanese paper as an important element in their work.
