Japanese papers and tissues are an essential component in the practice of paper conservation and book repair. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to select and use the appropriate Japanese paper for paper conservation and repair projects.
This course is presented in recorded modules which equal a full day six hour workshop. The fee includes all video modules, which will be available for three months, as well as a materials kit. The materials kit includes Japanese paper and most of the supplies you’ll need for the workshop along with basic items from your own studio.
There are so many different Japanese papers and tissues, and many tutorials use the term “Japanese Paper” generically. Learn the difference between different papers and how to select the best one for your project.
We’ll spend most of our time reviewing and discussing materials. There will also be some exercises for some segments
In this workshop you’ll learn about
· Japanese paper and tissue characteristics
· why select one paper over another.
· paper for page repairs
· paper for book cover repairs
· paper for backing and mounting
· paper for hinging
· different weights of tissues and papers
· different fiber types: kozo, gampi, mitsumata.
· fiber origins: Japan, Thailand, China and how they affect the paper
· mixed fiber papers
· difference between handmade and machine-made papers
· toned and dyed papers
· how to tone or dye your own papers
· effects of sizing win paper
· effects of wood sulphite in paper
