COMING SOON: Advanced Konnyaku Techniques on Japanese Paper | An Online Workshop 2025
Registration Opens Fall 2025
Note: if you are interested in being notified early about registration for this workshop, please let me know at info@washiarts.com
Prerequisite: Konnyaku Basics or familiarity with preparing and using konnyaku starch
This course is presented in recorded modules which equal a full day six hour workshop. The fee includes all video modules, which will be available for three months, as well as a materials kit. The materials kit includes Japanese paper and most of the supplies you’ll need for the workshop along with basic items from your own studio.
Building on the techniques presented in Momigami Basics, you will learn
· techniques for creating patterns in Japanese papers with konnyaku
· collage techniques using konnyaku
· using konnyaku with natural dyes
· sculptural techniques for Japanese paper and konnyaku
· creating structure for pages and forms
· combining konnyaku with other media and techniques
· seaming sheets of paper to create rolls
· finishing techniques for papers
This workshop includes a module on the work of artists using Japanese papers and konnyaku in their work to inspire you.
You will work with a range of Japanese papers: mid weight, light weight, handmade, machine-made, natural, dyed and decorative papers to understand how to treat each. At the end of the workshop, you will have a good range of reference samples.
There will be a live Zoom session one week after the release of the workshop so you can ask questions and share your work.
What you’ll need from your own studio
· soft brush — preferably natural bristle (no foam brushes)
· cellulose sponge
· glass jar with lid or bowl and whisk
· plastic mat or moisture friendly work surface (back of a cutting mat works well)
· place to hang paper to dry
· iron and ironing surface
· baking parchment to protect your iron (optional)
· gloves and apron (optional)
If I teach you well, you’ll find this is not a messy process. Konnyaku is all natural and actually makes your hands feel nice, but if you wish you may wear gloves.
The Paper Kit includes a container of konnyaku starch, a recipe card and a range of different Japanese papers so you can experiment and see which ones you enjoy working with. There are also some tools for creating patterns that we’ll be using in the workshop.
