The inclusion of clay in this paper makes it dimensionly stable, preventing shrinkage and curling in changing humidity levels. It is used in Japan as a backing for scrolls to help them hang flat. Kozo fiber is cooked with caustic soda, naturally bleached, made with clay (misu). pH at time of making is 8.2
